Job Description

SDue to continued growth within SubConnect, we have identified a new opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of subsea telecommunications jointing products from concept through to release. This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative engineering team and turn technical requirements into practical, manufacturable designs while supporting projects through key milestones, reviews, and delivery deadlines.

You will create concept models, assemblies, and engineering drawings in SolidWorks in line with company procedures and industry best practice. You will also support trial builds, produce related documentation including BOMs and Construction Manuals, manage drawing and component updates through formal change control, and maintain accurate records. In addition, you will support production by responding to manufacturer queries, contribute to jointing and cable testing activities, help design tools and equipment, work to quality standards including ISO 9001 and ISO 17025, promote safe working practices, and assess the wider impact of design changes across documents, systems, and production activities.

 

Key Deliverables:

  • Support the day-to-day management of projects from the design phase review process to the project completion against the project schedule.
  • Work with the development team to perform early-stage design feasibility testing and confirmation.
  • Aid the facilitation of regular design reviews with the team to ensure compliance of design process and delivery of product against relevant specifications, project deliverables, timescales & milestones.
  • Generation of concept models, general assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings according to the ‘control of drawings’ procedure and in accordance with best industry practice.
  • Support the Technical Author in the production of design Bill of Materials (BOMs) and Construction Manuals (CM).
  • Liaise with the Production team and the Technical Author on change or clarification requests on components or BOMs.
  • Process requested/required updates to parts, drawings and assemblies following the Issues & Changes procedures.
  • To be aware of the principles of cable testing and have the knowledge to evaluate the results and information given by the Test Facility ensuring that work is well documented.
  • Understand and apply testing methodologies for destructive and non-destructive approaches, ensuring that appropriate control and evaluation take place before, during, and after the test.
  • To be familiar with the operation of jointing technology such as moulding, splicing, and cable preparation.
  • Assist in the design and development of tools and equipment. Contributing to the effectiveness of tools and equipment through the application of technical and practical skills.
  • Follow the company quality system and assist in maintaining ISO9001 & ISO17025.
  • Design and Development planning, inputs, outputs, review, verification, and validation.
  • Controlling Design and Development changes.
  • Follow safe working practices and ensure compliance by others, including customers.
  • The above activities are all interconnected and change to one aspect has repercussions for others. So, an overall duty is to conduct impact assessments to ensure that all systems, documents, and applications are maintained accurately (e.g. development changes impact on several construction manuals, BOMs, JADE, website etc.).
 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Required: 

  • HNC/HND/Degree and/or relevant experience in engineering subject or technical training and experience.
  • Competent in 3D engineering design software packages (SolidWorks) in generation of concept models and detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • The ability to work on complex issues both in a team and individually, under pressure and in a quality way.
  • Ability and willingness to switch disciplines from one job to another in order to meet the needs of the business.
  • Considerable knowledge of MS Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel.

Ideal:

  • Technical training and experience appropriate to the work involved in subsea telecommunication jointing and allied technologies.
Location:  This role is based in the Chelmsford office and follows a hybrid working arrangement, with working 3 days in the office and the other 2 days working remotely each week.
