Job Description

Purpose:  

Reporting to the Depots Manager, the Assistant Depot Manger will be accountable for Portland Cable Depot marine plant and associated equipment storage and movements.  They will manage the safe and effective loading and discharging of all vessels in accordance with contract KPI’s.

Maintain a high-quality work environment, ensuring the most effective use of space and managing infrastructure services associated with cable operations.

Become conversant with the Depot Manager’s Responsibilities and deputise in their absence.

Key Deliverables:

  • Responsibility for all staff, equipment and site areas associated with the provision of Cable Depot marine plant and associated equipment storage and movements. Manage QHSE in accordance with company policies and procedures, which incorporating ISO 9000:2000 (Quality), ISO 14001:2004 (Environment), ISM (International Safety Management) and Health & Safety systems.
  • Act as the customers, contact point for any general reporting and enquiries relating to their plant.
  •  Organise and manage required the personnel (Contractors/Depot Personnel) and equipment to ensure safe and effective loading and discharging of all vessels in accordance with Contract KPI’s. Responsible for cable movements within the Depot.
  • Ensure that customers’ plant is always stored in line with manufacturers recommendations.
  • Provide and participate in an out-of-hours response service for emergency and in support of the business.
  • Instigate cable working processes and procedures, ensuring their implementation, control and updating.
  • Maintain a database for control of Portland Depot based stocks. Generate and distribute customer stock reports and storage invoices as required.  Provide vessel load & discharge plans and maintain communication between vessels and the Marine Support Facility during all operations.
  • Responsible for the effective line and performance management of all direct reports, including motivation and development.
  • Assist the Depots Manager in managing the Portland Depot building and facilities.
  • Provide customers with quotations and mange small projects associated with vessel load and discharge to other cable operations requested by customers.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree, HNC or HND, BTEC or equivalent in an engineering discipline or suitable experience considered.
  • Previous experience in a depot, marine, logistics, port operations or industrial operations environment.
  • Proven ability to plan, coordinate and manage the safe movement of plant, materials or equipment.
  • The ability to develop effective working relationships and communicate clearly with customers, ship personnel and contract staff.
  • Experience organising and managing contractors on site.
  • Experience in providing accurate cost and logistical analyses.
  • Experience in managing small multi-disciplined teams.
  • Proven team leadership skills, persuasive nature and good communicator.
  • Strong understanding of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment Management requirements.
  • Good working knowledge of all Microsoft Office Applications including computing skills required in database management.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple operational demands.
  • Flexible approach to working times and duties and the ability to operate pro-actively and autonomously with a strong attention to detail.

Desired: 

  • Practical experience of cable operations, including cable movement and handling practices, cable jointing and testing.
  • Experience with regard to plant storage criteria.
  • Experience in operation of lifting equipment and mechanical aids including Forklift Trucks.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of legislation covering all facets of depot operations.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
This role requires working on-site at the Portland Depot, Monday to Friday.  Candidates should be within commuting distance.  The expected start date is early February 2026.
