Purpose:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our OceanIQ team as a Permitting Officer & Route Engineer.  By joining OceanIQ you will work within our small team of geologists, marine surveyors, GIS experts and permitting specialists..

This is a full-time role supporting permitting and route engineering project delivery. This is a cross-functional role assisting the Permitting Manager and Route Planning Manager.

Within the Permitting team, the role will be to assist in ensuring that all permits, notifications and licenses are identified and obtained for Global Marine Group installation and maintenance projects. This may include assisting with stakeholder liaison as well as supporting with Environmental Assessments

The successful applicant will also assist in the design of power and fibre optic cable routes which mitigate risks and ensure the cable system’s security using a corporate GIS and marine survey data. They will assist in the production of technical design studies which quantify potential risks to future submarine cable systems.

Many of the tasks and activities delivered by this role require specialist knowledge of marine cable permits, survey and installation. A structured in-house training and development program will be provided to provide this knowledge and help personal career development.  The role would suit a recent graduate looking to start or further their career in the submarine cable industry.  

Key Deliverables: 

  • Supporting the Permitting Manager to apply for and obtain permits, licences and approvals to allow construction, installation and maintenance of cable systems (directly or via subcontractor/agent).
  • Development of key relationships within the marine, coastal and terrestrial environments affected by the submarine telecom and submarine power industries.
  • Generation of cable route position lists and straight line diagrams.
  • Assist with the creation of Desk Top Studies (DTS).
  • Willing to travel worldwide to investigate potential landing points and meet with in-country agencies to discuss the permitting requirements associated with telecom and power cable installations.
  • Research into the various influences on cable routeing.
  • Support the Permitting Manager with the continual update of the internal permitting database and continued development of permitting capability.
  • Preparation and Management of GIS databases for desk top studies.
  • Assessment of marine survey data for use in cable routeing and burial analysis.
  • Present internally and externally on work undertaken in this role.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Experience of using GIS (Intergraph GeoMedia/ESRI) software or equivalent.
  • Educated to a degree level any suitable earth science degrees (Hydrographic Surveying, Marine Geophysics, Applied Marine Geoscience, Survey and GIS, Geography).
  • Basic understanding of marine environmental sensitivities/ ecological pressures.
  • Excellent technical report writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including ability to communicate and negotiate with a wide range of people and organisations; and awareness of, and sensitivity to, international cultural differences.
  • Ability to learn new skills and a keenness to develop.
  • An attention to detail and a logical approach.
  • Ability to recognise potential issues and contribute to actively solve problems.
  • Computer literate.

Ideal:

  • Full UK Driving License

This role is Chelmsford office based, 3 times a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Monday and Friday is working remote.
