Senior Project Engineer

Location:
Aberdeen or Chelmsford
Department:
Engineering
Job Description

Central Engineering Services sits within the Group, providing essential technical services to the business units.  We are a lean, dynamic team who are proud of having a can-do attitude with the capabilities, expertise and attitude to deliver success both with the exceptional and routine projects.  As well as discreet packages of work (mobilisations, fabrications, drawings, etc.), we are frequently seconded into business units, helping their project delivery teams for periods up to 12 months.

We need a experienced Engineer who is ambitious and wanting to step up out of pure project delivery into a position involving more financial responsibility (budgeting and controlling costs), departmental control (procedures, improvement and efficiency initiatives) and longer term planning.  As a department we support the Business Units working under a Project Manager and also execute our own Projects (for example significant vessel conversions).  You’ll be comfortable and happy working in a matrix environment, and have a talent for forming teams that have the right mix of people.

The role is varied and would suit a candidate with experience in offshore operations, looking to consolidate academic knowledge and perhaps a previous marine background.  We work on vessel conversions, offshore operations, desk based studies and plenty of site mobilisations.  Relying heavily on subcontractors, you can expect to be designing deck layouts, managing budgets, controlling a delivery schedule and appointing consultant companies in a single day.  Other scopes may be assisting with bids preparations, project delivery in business units or other essential works for the business.  Going offshore is possible if you’re directly engaged with a project, but the successful candidate shouldn’t expect to be deploying on vessels regularly throughout the year.  Some management of Engineers day to day activities should be expected, with line management to follow if successful.

We’re proud to recruit, promote and reward on merit, so we don’t specify a minimum experience level.  It is what you can deliver, not time served.  Notwithstanding this, a typical candidate is expected to have 5-10 years experience and probably be a Chartered Engineer.

Mentoring and personal growth is also a big part of the company’s culture.  Depending on experience, you’ll be expected to help the team where your capabilities allow, and learn from others to get better.  We operate a 360 feedback and learning approach and you’ll be working with some of the best in the business.  We have an active apprenticeship and graduate development programme, along with a STEM commitment and formal mentoring process.

Challenging the routine and driving through best practice brings about challenges.  The successful candidate will need to be a highly motivated, team player, fully committed to safety, open to new ways of working and have a healthy obsession with delivering work to the highest possible standard.  There is pressure in the role which will need to be managed, requiring good self-discipline and excellent teamwork.

GMG has various offices around the UK (Chelmsford, Portland, Blyth, Grimsby and Aberdeen), we are flexible about locations and recognise that home working is a reality and a benefit when managed correctly.  The successful candidate will look forward to being pivotal to multiple projects and being exposed to considerable challenge from the outset.

Key Deliverables:

  • Prepare the provisioning/sub-contracting scopes of work, acting both as a client and contractor, and evaluate proposals from the sub-contractors.
  • Checking and approving drawings from review, to construction up to as-built revisions.
  • Estimating mobilisation works and preparing budgets
  • Planning, scheduling and risk assessing for all elements of vessel mobilisations.
  • Key role in communicating between sites/vessels and the office.
