Global Marine is the most established of the four business units of Global Marine Group, and needs a Project Engineer to support them in their project delivery and wider business.
This role follows some organisational change, and the successful applicant will need to be adaptable and relentless in identifying opportunities and areas where they will be most effective. The Engineer’s time will be split approximately 80:20 between project and corporate work. Operating in a matrix management environment, the candidate will report to the Engineering Manager for departmental and HR matters, with day-to-day work managed within the GM business unit.
Project delivery is all about engineering the project, carried out within a small team of the Project Manager, Offshore Manager and Engineer. The deliverables of this will be in the Master Document Register, which the successful applicant will ultimately manage. It will be a small team, needing good communications skills to reach out to the wider group for support and expertise, which will be essential in achieving safe, profitable and effective project execution. Willingness to travel is a must, whilst recognising that most work will be done at home or in the office. There may be some requirements to go offshore, although the nature of the business is such that this is rarely required and so regular extended periods on vessels should not be expected.
Outside of projects, the candidate will need to support the corporate development of the business unit. This will include working on processes and procedures to help integrate into the wider group and support the Head of Project Delivery as needed. This will be a great opportunity to develop commercial skills further on a basis which probably exists from the candidates career to date.
There may be other ad-hoc work as needed with the operations of the Business Unit. With a fleet of cable ships worldwide and a series of maintenance contracts, there is a lot going on.
The role isn’t for the faint hearted. The work will be demanding, problems often initially identified without a clear solution and we will always be looking to improve what we do, better our already excellent safety record, challenge the limits and do it more efficiently. Being a 24/7 world-wide business means that sometimes the hours have to be put in and the need for some late nights and weekend working. Knowledge and acceptance of this is balanced by working within a great team, involved with prestigious projects and genuinely being able to contribute to the success.
There are lots of opportunities for the right candidate who can think critically, act effectively and who is ambitious to succeed. Being a new role will be dynamic, and the right candidate will see this as an opportunity. So if you like what you read above, are passionate about offshore engineering, ambitious to grow your career and are prepared to work hard to do so, you sound like the perfect candidate.
