Assistant Route Engineer

Job Description
To assist in the design of power and fibre optic cable routes which mitigate risks and ensure the cable system’s security using a corporate GIS and marine survey data. To assist in the production of technical design studies which quantify potential risks to future submarine cable systems.

Many of the tasks and activities delivered by this role require specialist knowledge of marine cable survey and installation. A structured in-house training and development program will be provided to provide this knowledge and help personal career development.

Key Deliverables:

  • Generation of cable route position lists and straight line diagrams
  • Assistance in the provision of cost estimates for desk study and survey related activities
  • Preparation of Desk Top Studies
  • Research into the various influences on cable routeing
  • Undertake visits to potential landing sites worldwide
  • Preparation and Management of GIS databases for desk top studies and land falls
  • Assessment of marine survey data for use in cable routeing and burial analysis
  • Present internally and externally on work undertaken in this role
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Experience of using GIS (Intergraph GeoMedia/ESRI) software or equivalent
  • Excellent technical report writing skills
  • Suitable earth science degree (geography, geomatics, geology)
  • Computer literate, with experience of technical software programmes
  • Ability to learn new skills and a keenness to develop
  • An attention to detail and a logical approach


  • Marine survey experience
  • Knowledge of the offshore environment
