Engineering is at the core of our business, and the challenges we face means we need the best people with us, regardless of background.  Whether it is designing a vessel, modifying a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) or engineering a steel grillage, effective design delivered by technical drawings is central to the engineering process.  We rely on graphical methods to understand a scope, to plan operations, win business and ensure that safety is designed into all we do throughout the life cycle of that project.

As a central resource to the Global Marine Group, you will work on projects across the Oil & Gas, Renewable and Telecommunications industries, pushing boundaries of what technology can do.  The Apprentice Draughtsperson will be a permanent and vital component of the Engineering Department.

We are looking for an Apprentice who has an interest in Marine Technology, a keen eye for detail and passionate about Engineering Design.  It would suit those who have either finished A-Levels or perhaps spend some time in industry and looking to refocus their careers on Engineering.  Opportunity will surround the successful candidate; GMG is a company where those who strive are allowed to achieve.  Following an initial period to understand the role (duration entirely dependent on the candidates ability and enthusiasm) UK and International travel will be required, working offshore an option and possibilities to support site work in dockyards and ports plentiful.

The role of the Apprentice Draughtsperson will include working in 2D and 3D.  2D tasks will include:

  • Preparing technical storyboard and drawings (including 3rd angle orthographic) describing how to carry out marine operations.
  • Visiting sites and vessels as necessary (worldwide) to survey and measure out areas to ensure documentation is accurate and up to date.
  • Work on and ensure vessel General Arrangement drawings are of the highest standard.
  • Designing items to specific industry standards, rules and legislation, and checking other works to ensure that they meet the requirements.

3D tasks will include:

  • Build 3D models within Solid works software
  • Support the use of 3D survey systems to enhance visualisation across the Global Fleet.
  • Support the use of 3D printing in order to prototype concepts and ideas.

Make no mistake, this job isn’t easy or for those who are content being comfortable.  The role will be challenging, requiring hard work, flexibility and long hours depending on the project, with outside study required to achieve the course whilst delivering for the business.  The successful candidate will be of the highest calibre, a self-starter who is motivated by job satisfaction and working with highly motivated and high performing colleagues.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
 We can train the right candidate, as the correct attitude and aptitude is more important that the correct subjects.  The candidate should have a track record of achievement in what they have done with a natural tendency to complete what they have chosen to start. 


  • Total commitment to safety by design.
  • Willingness to learn and develop within the offshore construction industry.
  • Demonstrable eye for detail and conscientious approach to work.
Advantageous Abilities/Certification:
  • Comfortable working with IT systems (MS Office)
  • Academic qualifications in Mathematics, Mechanics, Physical Sciences and Design Technology.
  • Previous experience in projects an advantage.
  • Driving licence.
  • Knowledge of marine environment.
